Character Name: Zerxus Ilerez
Series: Critical Role generally, Exandria Unlimited: Calamity specifically.
Age: 37
From When?: The last episode, as he died for a fourth time and his soul was consigned to Hell. (It was a rough day.)

Warden Justification: Zerxus is literally a Paladin of Redemption. He believes in it so fiercely that he tried to redeem the Lord of the Hells.

There’s a great deal of arrogance in that, which he can admit to in hindsight.

However, his faith – the profound, immutable belief that everyone is capable of change – has not been shaken, and there’s no Inmate on the Barge who he’ll look at and think No, you cannot be saved.

He very intimately understands duty, sacrifice, and grief; he understands good intentions leading to disastrous outcomes; he understands failing the people you love. His nature is to be upfront and unflinching, which definitely won’t work for every Inmate but could make a lot of headway with others.

Item: A brass medallion.

Abilities/Powers: Zerxus is a fourteenth level paladin, and I've listed those abilities here. I tried to translate them into RP, and I'm totally willing to rework things or strike them out as needed.

He is also an oracle, but this isn't something he actively tries to do; either he'll have a weird prophetic dream or he won't.

Wardening Strategies and Philosophies: He’ll be wary and reclusive at first, not entirely sure this isn’t Asmodeus playing with him. As time goes on, he’ll feel more comfortable in this environment – never quite extroverted, because he wasn’t that even before he had ram horns, but very driven and diligent. He’ll definitely get some sort of job, and do it to the best of his ability.

The Barge itself won’t phase him much; the city he spent his final years in was one of the most magical in a very magical time. His closest friends included two elves, one fey and a hawk man. He’s no longer quite human himself.

He’s not a showman, but he knows how to take charge, how to galvanise and unite people. He’ll want to keep his fellow Wardens in check, or inspire them to keep trying; he’ll want to keep an eye on Inmates in general, in case anyone is slipping through the cracks. (Especially the younger ones.) As an extension of this, he’ll treat temporary pairings seriously.

There’s a lot of intensity to Zerxus that could be either encouraging or off-putting. He’s painfully earnest, which is fairly easy to manipulate if you know what buttons to push. (Even now, even after he’s been played like a fiddle and his entire world burned.) On the other hand, someone who just cuts through the bullshit might be a good fit for a more slippery Inmate, depending on how their dynamic develops.

His methodology will be very straightforward: examine the mistakes and why they happened, and learn how to make better choices. He’ll be very insistent that every Inmate is more than the worst they have done, that it doesn’t need to define them going forward. They still have a choice, and they always will.

No matter what, he will be fiercely protective, which could definitely come across as condescending. He’s proud and stubborn, but not impossible to talk down. He’s got a self-righteous streak, because paladins gonna paladin. He worships a concept rather than a god, though, and will find it hard to relate to people who devote themselves to an actual deity.

He's not one to accept conventional wisdom simply because that's the way things have always been. This backfired on him quite severely before he died, but he'll still gravitate towards people who question the status quo, either of their own world or the Barge itself.

Zerxus has very little patience for magical thinking; the idea that if you don't speak of something, it's not happening, is one of the few things he will still be blatantly judgemental about.

If his Inmate disappears he will not take it well, because this is not a man who knows how to healthily process grief.

Deal: None.

Sample Network Entry: [ Zerxus hasn’t made many appearances on the network. It’s public speaking from a distance, but that really only helps so much. (Especially when he doesn’t have Nydas at his shoulder hyping him up, or Patia to give him tips directly inside his mind, or Evandrin - )

This is different, though; this is a crisis. And for once, there’s no attempt to make himself seem smaller. His voice is strong and steady, and there’s a fire in his eyes. ]

People of the Barge. Wardens and Inmates both, because at the end of the day we’re all passengers here, and we need to be able to rely on each other if we’re going to get through this.

If you don’t know me, my name is Zerxus Ilerez. In life, I was a knight tasked to defend one of the most dangerous cities in the world. The Barge has a lot in common with Avalir: It’s full of people with more power than sense. It’s full of secrets and pride and selfishness.

[ Of strained friendships, enduring grief, impossible choices. ]

We could argue about all of that. Or we could preserve what we have and make it better another day.

[ He’s not actually sure if this speech, which usually gives people a surge of vitality, will work through a screen. But the network clearly has some strange properties; he has to give it a shot, and if nothing else he can tell people that there’s a reason to keep fighting, and none at all to turn it on each other. ]

If you’re ready to fight, meet me in front of the gym. If you’re injured, tell us so someone can get you to the infirmary. If you’re vulnerable, hunker down in your cabins and wait for this to blow over. Don’t be reckless and don’t be stupid.
